Acupuncture is a central practice within Chinese medicine. It involves placing very fine, sterile, single-use needles at selected points on the body. The choice of points is guided by your individual assessment and the focus of your session.
At TaoWest, Dr Maaz combines traditional Chinese medicine principles with an anatomy-informed approach, considering muscles, joints, connective tissues and movement where relevant.
In Chinese medicine theory, meridians are interconnected pathways through which qi and blood are understood to circulate. Acupuncture point selection draws on this traditional framework, including the relationships between qi, blood, yin and yang.
Before treatment, Maaz explains the proposed approach, what you might feel and relevant risks, with time for questions.
Where does cupping fit in?
Spotted someone at the beach with circular marks on their back? Chances are they’ve had cupping rather than a close encounter with an octopus.
Cupping uses cups placed on the skin to create suction. It may be included in an acupuncture appointment where appropriate, with placement guided by your assessment.
Within traditional Chinese medicine, cupping is described as encouraging the movement of qi and blood. The temporary circular marks it can leave are a familiar feature of the treatment; tenderness or bruising can also occur. Maaz will explain what to expect before you decide whether to include it.
