MEET YOUR PRACTITIONER
Dr Maaz Ali Tariq, MATCM, L.Ac.
Chinese medicine practitioner · Acupuncturist · Educator
Dr Maaz is the lead acupuncturist at TaoWest in South Fremantle. His interest in Chinese medicine, movement and the relationship between body and mind deepened in 2008 while studying holistic health.

After completing his undergraduate studies in philosophy and holistic health in San Francisco, Maaz bought a one-way ticket to China, hoping to study Tai Chi with a mountaintop master. He soon discovered that enthusiasm could only take him so far without Mandarin—some of his grand intentions were lost in translation.
Nevertheless, that journey became three years of travel through Asia, exploring Chinese medicine, Tai Chi, tea culture and meditation. Eventually, he discovered that the Tai Chi teacher he had been searching for lived just two blocks from his home in Los Angeles.
Returning home, Maaz completed his Master’s in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2018, with further studies in Qi Cultivation and orthopaedic acupuncture. He subsequently became a licensed acupuncturist in California and is registered in Australia as an acupuncturist and Chinese herbal medicine practitioner.
Alongside his clinical education, Maaz brings more than two decades of personal practice and teaching in yoga and Qi Gong. His training in Zen Shiatsu and craniosacral therapy has further shaped his appreciation of touch, movement and attentive observation.
These influences come together in a practice that connects traditional Chinese medicine with an understanding of anatomy, fascia and how the body moves.
A practitioner and a teacher
Teaching remains an important part of Maaz’s work. He teaches anatomy and orthopaedic principles in professional education and has led workshops and advanced training internationally.
At TaoWest, that same teaching spirit shapes each consultation. Maaz makes unfamiliar concepts approachable, explains the reasoning behind his recommendations and welcomes questions.
For those interested in movement and meditation, individual Qi Cultivation sessions offer guided practice in breathing, Tai Chi and Qi Gong.
